Need More Time.. Oh Wait!
Over the last week I’ve added yet more to my list of unplayed games. I would normally say “I need more time”.. but I’ve now finished work, and it’s Christmas! Though I’ll soon have to start on some projects, it means I do have a lot more free time 🙂
Today was partly spent trying to achieve a Gold Badge in the adrenaline challenge mode of Defense Grid: The Awakening.. trying, but not succeeding. I completed the map, but didn’t score highly enough to get gold.
Earning a Gold Badge, and thereby getting the Flurry achievement was one of the objectives of Valve’s latest sale and competition: The Great Gift Pile.. collecting coal and winning prizes, with the chance to win everything on Steam via the Epic Holiday Giveaway on the 2nd Jan. Everything on Steam.. wow.. I really wouldn’t have enough time!
Last week, I acquired Empire Earth: Gold Edition via GOG.com.. Empire Earth and expansion The Art of Conquest were being given away to anyone who came to the Good Old Games site! Empire Earth is a real-time strategy by Stainless Steel Studios, said to be somewhat like my beloved Age of Empires, but going from the Stone Age all the way to the Space Age. Looking forward to this one..
I previously noted that I’d won a copy of EA’s Alice: Madness Returns for the 360, through DR Gaming‘s 12 Days of Christmas giveaway on Facebook.. the game arrived this week, and better still, it came with a bonus Xbox LIVE code for the original American McGee’s Alice! I remember playing the PC version of this game during my first Christmas together with Tim, on his recommendation 😉
Via a GameSpot UK competition, I won a Cyborg RAT 9 gaming mouse and “gaming surface” aka mousemat 😉
I’ve handed my address over and now await the postman! Great timing too.. my mouse has been failing intermittently for a while now! I also won a copy of Orcs Must Die! for Tim, through Day 2 of Splitkick.com’s Holiday Giveaway 2011. Note: I’m not keeping track of the number of competitions I haven’t won 😉
Yet other new games have arrived thanks to the Humble Indie Bundle.. the contents of Bundle #3 have been added as bonus gifts for those who paid over the average! This bundle contained Crayon Physics Deluxe, which I got from the Humble Introversion Bundle, and Lazy 8 Studios’ Cogs, which a friend gave me earlier in the year, as well as VVVVVV, Hammerfight and And Yet It Moves.
VVVVVV is a 2d platformer by Terry Cavanagh, with an interesting gravity-switching mechanic which you use to travel and avoid hazards. I’m hopeful that this doesn’t require too much flailing at the keyboard to manage, otherwise I’ll find it more frustrating than fun. Hammerfight, by Kranx Productions, is an aerial combat game where you control airships outfitted with hammers and swords!
The final game of the list is Broken Rules’ And Yet It Moves. It isn’t a horror game, as I first thought when I heard the title, but a 2d puzzle where you control the orientation of the game environment as well as the player character. This is the game I’m looking forward to most out of the three as I expect the puzzles to be quite fun!
Competitions and Presents!
What’s better than games? Free games! Having seen a large number of Christmas competitions out at the moment, I decided that I may as well try to win some games and spare my bank balance the pain..
So last weekend, I won a copy of the beautiful Trine from a competition on Splitkick.com! Since I had a copy, the guys kindly let me give it to a friend.. although this turned into a comedy of errors as he told me the wrong email and only realised after I’d told them.. but one more email later, he got the game 🙂
Oh, and I’ve completed Trine too! I loved the last level, with the continually rising lava, and the evil ghostly figure trying to stop us. There was also a bonus level, which was another mad dash to escape rising lava, but with purple vials to collect on the way.
Developers Frozenbyte have also now released Trine 2, and I found a few competitions for the game, and told friends to enter too. One of these involved writing a short story.. and I was surprised to find it really hard to come up with something, and how self-conscious I felt writing it and sending it in. I realised that I’m even more fussy about my writing than I am about my drawing!
My friend was lucky enough to win one of the competitions for Trine 2.. so he now has both games.. and through DR Gaming‘s 12 Days of Christmas giveaway on Facebook, I won a copy of EA’s Alice: Madness Returns for the 360.. awesome stuff as both Tim and I have wanted this since the teaser trailers came out over a year ago!
Valve have been running a Daily Wishlist Giveaway on Steam over the last week, where a winner each day will get the contents of their Wishlist. They’ve also had some great offers on, and two friends gifted me games as they came up: Robot Entertainment‘s fortress defence Orcs Must Die and DLC, and Bastion, an RPG by Supergiant Games!
I’ve been playing through Orcs Must Die, and discovered some of the new weapons and traps.. the Fire Bracers allow me to throw fireballs, and are therefore automatically awesome, although I run out of mana rather quickly.. and the Pounder, a ceiling-mounted trap, crushes the orcs with such finality that I can’t not love it! 🙂
I was also pleasantly surprised by the introduction of the Weavers, which add optional talent trees to the game, either strengthening the War Mage or the traps and Guardians. I love the fact you can choose these at the beginning of each level, so you can change how you play each time 🙂
i-42
Where i-40 was cold and windy, especially in the temporary structure we were seated in, i-42 was sunny and hot almost the whole way through.. 😀
I drove half the way down, with a death-grip on the steering wheel (I’ve not done very much motorway driving), past a ridiculous number of lorries and one place where an accident on the other side of the road caused our side to slow to around 10mph. Tim took the last part of the driving.. we were hoping to catch up with another friend at this point, as text messages had shown we were only 5 minutes behind, but with a stop-off at Sainsbury’s we were never going to make it. 😀
Check-in was again nice and quick thanks to arriving early, and instead of waiting around to take our PCs in at 6, we headed to the pub for food and drinks first.
All in all this was far better than the cold and wet start to i40 last year.. we hadn’t been able to go into the site as the internet hadn’t been set up for our temporary structure! Our group were seated in B1 this time, away from the loud and annoying people who think roaring for every reload is ‘atmosphere’. Although it was still hot, there was a balcony to escape to, and it was a lot quieter and nothing was being thrown around.. definitely going to be pushing for this spot next event.
One of the first games I played here was the awesome Portal 2, which I had started earlier but lacked the time to finish. Plenty of other people were playing, with some on co-op, so I had to get a move on to avoid being spoiled..
I loved GlaDOS’ malicious comments in the earlier part of the game, though I wondered how I was going to end up making a break for it as she seemed happy to test me endlessly. Wheatley was quite funny up until his change, which I think I should have spotted.. but I was rather gleeful when he turned GLaDOS into a potato even if he did still have me trapped.
The different coloured gels were a lot of fun. On my first encounter with the white goop though, I wasn’t entirely sure what to do and ended up covering as many surfaces as I could in frustration, before spotting the little ledge I was meant to go to. I loved evil Wheatley, especially when he tried to kill me in stupidly obvious ways.. 🙂
The second day of LAN involved a barbeque with the rest of our group.. we had the weather for it this time at least. I’m not sure if we’re technically allowed to have BBQs on-site, but no security turned up, so no matter 😉
We also took a look through the exhibition hall, where we tried out a few games on the Nintendo 3DS, including Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and a Zelda game which made me feel quite ill trying to focus on the screen while moving it around to aim the catapult. While I love the idea, I’m going to be staying away from the 3DS.. if I feel bad after a few minutes use, it’s just not for me.
Aside from this, the only other real point of interest for me was the Demon stand, where they had an amazing car simulator running DIRT 2. The fastest lap was to be rewarded with a year’s free internet, and of course I came nowhere near the quickest time though I loved the experience. The seat, pedals and wheel come to some crazy price.. I think £24,000 was mentioned..
Elsewhere in the hall it was surprisingly quiet.. no freebies, and very little attempts by staff to draw people in to the various stands either. There were people playing on what might have been some kind of tournament, but with no real interaction, we wandered through and back out again.
There are usually a number of flyers on the desks, and this time there was a 50% discount for the EA Store. After trying out Bulletstorm on a friend’s PC, I bought both that and Crysis 2.. so much for not buying any more games.. 🙂
I made a start on Crysis 2.. but there were too many distractions to concentrate on it during the day and I was playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent when it got late. There were a few changes to the sections I’d seen in the demo, with a bit more puzzle in the form of the chemicals I needed to find and mix. The part where I had to avoid an invisible enemy in the water made me just as jumpy as when I’d originally seen it, which was probably amusing for those near me in our row.
Other games which saw some action were Beat Hazard on a friend’s computer while he played GRID on mine, some Killing Floor, an attempt at League of Legends (seriously out of practise) and a round or two of Unreal Tournament 3. I had also brought along my Xbox 360, so there was a quick look at Stacking, and a bit of the co-op Zombie Mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops, as well as an all-too-brief look at Homefront for a friend who hadn’t seen it yet. Maybe next time!
Tim made some use of his 30 day trial of WoW, though it was hard to tell if he was enjoying it or putting up with it for the sake of saying he’d had a go. I also managed to get a little bit of time in WoW, and started off collecting bits for the Noblegarden Easter Event.. there were plenty of bunnies hopping around, including a pet.. 😉
I also pestered a friend to show me where to get the rather interesting Venomhide mount.. a pet which turns into a mount!
Unlike my Warrior friend, I had no trouble in being poisoned the required number of times.. he had to take off all his gear and use the most useless weapon he could find, whereas I just hit the Ravasaur with the basket I was collecting eggs in 😉
Eventually I had been poisoned enough and I was given my own Hatchling to take care of..
Our last night of LAN included some non-gaming hijinks as one friend started falling asleep in his chair.. this meant he got plastic cups balanced on his head :>
There was no chance of an all-nighter this time either.. all too tired, maybe from the heat, and we headed back to the tents at around 4.30am.
The last day didn’t include the usual CFMN vs inv TF2 match; instead we had a big game of L4d2 versus.. for which I had to switch to Tim’s PC as my copy of L4d2 had managed to corrupt itself. Awesome game.. will have to make sure that we get more of this played from home too 🙂
Darkspore
Darkspore is a sci-fi Action-RPG by Maxis Software, published by EA. The player takes charge of squads of genetically mutated heroes which come in five types: Plasma, Bio, Necro, Cyber and Quantum, and fights to save the galaxy from the nightmarish Darkspore.. a hive mind of mutated creatures which are a result of genetic alteration gone mad.
Tim pointed Darkspore out to me a while ago, after seeing a rather nice trailer.. I signed up for the closed beta and had some fun with the first levels, using a couple of the heroes and messing around with the character editor a little.. though not creating any phallic creatures for which the original Spore was known 😉
I’ve been waiting for this to enter open beta so I could play with friends too, and so I was pleased to see it arrive on Steam this week. Last night we got together to play the first two levels.. and for once it was me who was running off, using Blitz’s rather cool teleport ability to get right into the fight.
Of all the heroes I’ve tried so far, Blitz is my favourite.. look at those claws! His teleport ability, ‘Ride the Lightning’, makes up for his lack of ranged attack, and he cuts through enemies fairly quickly. His shield also comes in handy, zapping enemies who come too close.
During the closed beta, I unlocked Arakna, a Necro hero who collects the souls of downed enemies with one ability, firing them out around her in a rapid burst, where they then explode with another ability. She would have been my second squad member, but my heroes were reset with the start of the open beta, and this time I decided to unlock some different ones, starting with Vex.
Vex is a Quantum Hero, with time-travel abilities. The Chrono Blink reminded me of Blitz’s teleport, but seemed to use more energy, and I felt that his melee attacks were rather slow. I replaced him with SRS-42 the Missile Commander, a Cyber hero who uses ranged explosive weapons.. can’t go wrong with that, huh?
SRS-42’s abilities include a Missile Barrage, which brings down 15 missiles in quick succession on a location of your choosing.. best used on a slow moving target, or on a unit stunned or incapacitated by an ally. His other abilities are more for self-protection; one removes all status effects, while the other detonates enemy projectiles on-route to SRS-42.
The open beta is available via Steam until Monday 4th April.. I hope to get some more time in on this before it finishes so I can try out more heroes.. and I also want to try out the PvP 😉
Crysis 2 Demo
My interest in EA’s Crysis 2 demo comes more from friends’ excitement about the game than anything else, as I’ve not even played the original game. I didn’t have any real idea of what to expect from the multiplayer, so I was glad of the intro on launch which gave a quick run through of the nanosuit and the objectives of the different game-modes.
Be strong; be fast; be invisible.. all possible thanks to the rather interesting nanosuit, a battlesuit which gives you improved armour, speed or invisibility depending on how you like to play.. speed is always fun, and I loved the idea of the ground stomp, though as yet I have to actually use it on a target. I found the armour just didn’t seem to last very long or add much protection when in a direct confrontation with an enemy. I preferred stealth as this allowed me to get out of trouble while on low health, as well as helping in attempts to sneak up behind enemies. I also found via watching one of my deaths on kill-cam, that the enemy can still see you while stealthed thanks to your shadow, which still appears as normal!
There were two maps and game-modes to choose from: Skyline, an instant-action team game, and Pier 17, which had alien drop pods to capture.
I rather liked this mode as it added a bit more direction to the game. If you were unable to secure the pod for your team and then defend it, all was not lost as a new pod would be dropped at another location on the map.
Of the two available maps, I preferred Skyline with its variety of indoor and outdoor areas and accessible roofs. I also liked how the greenhouses changed through the round.. you can climb up and run along the top of them at the start, until stray bullets smash the glass leaving gaping holes for you to fall through instead.
Despite the multiplayer being fun so far, I’m not sure whether I’ll pick this up or not.. I have plenty of shooters, and more than enough multiplayer games to keep myself and friends occupied for quite some time, so the singleplayer will really have to get my interest if I’m going to add this game to my collection 🙂
Battlefield Bad Company 2
I picked up EA’s Battlefield Bad Company 2 through Steam, after another too-good-to-miss offer. Tim already had it, and though I could have just borrowed his PC to play the singleplayer, I tend to prefer having my own copy anyway.
After installing.. and a painful sign-in to EA.. I attempted to join multiplayer with Tim and some friends. However, having been dumped on the opposite team to the guys I found myself without any direction as to where to go, and then quickly became frustrated when snipers kept picking off the few targets I managed to see on the radar.
The next attempts at multiplayer were much better as we were able to form a squad of our own, meaning we were always on the same team. I liked the ability to respawn onto a squad-mate too, as that meant getting straight back into the action, rather than getting killed after paying more attention to finding a friend than what you’re walking past..
Playing while not in a frustrated mood allowed me to recognise how nice the game looks too 🙂
After starting on the regular soldier type class, I tried out the recon class, and surprised myself when I managed to get on quite well with the sniper rifle.. Normally I’m too impatient to sit still and wait, but there wasn’t too much waiting around at all. Marking up a target or assisting in a kill also gains points, so if I wasn’t able to actually kill somebody, I still got credit for marking them.. bonus! 🙂
The tanks felt rather slow and too easy for enemies to surround.. although you can repair them, it seemed easier to jump out and try to run for cover.. or be blown up in the explosion!
I didn’t like my first few helicopter encounters, as they seemed impossible to take down and the crew were able to hit quite hard. However, they’re great when they’re on your side, especially when you have friends you can communicate with! Our group had one person fly while the other two looked after the mounted guns.. and they were a lot of fun to use 🙂
Flying isn’t easy though – I guess this is to balance out how strong they are on the field. My turn at flying ended in disaster: I started to tip forward as soon as I got the helicopter off the ground, then my attempt to bring the nose up then resulted in flying backwards and crashing! Maybe one to try out on an empty server sometime..
