Nintendo Restricts 18+ Wii U eShop Content in Europe

Nintendo has restricted access to 18+ games and content on the Wii U eShop to a very short time window of 11pm till 3am.

A member of NeoGAF’s forum contacted customer support after noticing he was unable to access some parts of the store, and received a response saying that:

“Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.  We have thus decided to restrict the access to content which is unsuitable to minors (PEGI) to the 11 P.M. – 3 A.M. time window.”

A further comment said:

“We would like to inform you that it is an additional precaution to make sure that minors cannot access content which is inappropriate for their age.”

The 18+ content is restricted even for accounts with no parental restrictions: I tested it on my own console, and was unable to access ZombiU or Assassin’s Creed 3 content, despite my age being set correctly and my email having been validated.  I can still launch the ZombiU game, and access the online community via Miiverse.

This situation raises a the question: do Nintendo not trust their parental control systems to actually restrict children from accessing 18+ content?

I’m quite irritated by this.  I am over 18.. there are no children on my console, even.. so I really don’t see why my access should be limited at all.  I feel that it’s the parent‘s responsibility to control what their children can access.  Content providers should certainly include tools to help parents, but they should not be slapping restrictions on the rest of us!

Limiting the purchase of 18+ games like this can only hurt Nintendo and the Wii U.. neither the Xbox 360 or PS3 have these restrictions.  As for the ridiculous timeframe of 11pm to 3am.. this is inconvenient for most and impossible for many.
