GAME Over and Other News

GAME has now officially filed for administration, after suspension of their shares this morning.  Stores will continue to trade for the time being.

BioWare’s Mass Effect 3 woes continue this week.. gamers complaining about the ending, Amazon allegedly offering refunds on copies of the game, and now Dr Ray Muzyka, the co-founder and GM of BioWare, has released a statement which seems to suggest they may change the ending, or add more endings, at least.

To counter bad news with good.. I was pleased to see that the Chancellor has now announced tax credits for the UK gaming industry, this should hopefully boost the industry and allow the UK to compete with the rest of the world!  (more…)

Grim Times

It’s really not looking good for GAME.  Yesterday’s news showed that they were looking for a buyer.. a few options such as a partial GameStop buyout were being outed in the press, with the latest possible buyers being Hilco and OpCapita.

Share prices, which started the week at 3.5p, fell to below 1p yesterday morning, and only just made it back over the penny mark.  This may put buyers off.  It may be that buyers are waiting until GAME goes into administration, as they can then negotiate around store liabilities.

GAME has also failed to secure stocks of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which is due on March 23rd, and a press release from Tecmo Koei states that neither Ninja Gaiden 3 or Warriors Orochi 3 will be available through GAME or GameStation in the UK and Ireland, with alternative stores listed as HMV, ASDA, Blockbuster, or online.

Other bad news, or bad press at least, came for EA and BioWare.. there was a large backlash against Mass Effect 3’s ending, which apparently doesn’t take into account players’ choices in the game.

Fans discovered that the Day 1 DLC character can be unlocked from the disc; EA stepped forward to say that From Ashes is not on the disc, but is a 600MB+ download; but that some “framework elements and character models needed to be put on disc”.

The latest news is that a multiplayer DLC for the game has been spotted, by somebody using a development kit.  No pricing or release date has been mentioned as yet, but this news doesn’t seem to be getting a good reception from fans.  At this rate, we’ll be waiting for the GOTY edition.

The Resurrected Scroll of Resurrection, and Other News

Blizzard are encouraging WoW players to bring their friends back to the game, with the latest version of their Scroll of Resurrection.  The player referring their friend gets a Spectral Mount, while the returning player gets a free upgrade to Cataclysm, a boost to level 80 for one character, and free character move if required, so they can join their friend’s realm and faction.

In the News – 2nd March

Assassin’s Creed 3 will be set in North America during the second half of the 18th Century and the events of the American Revolution.  These details and others appeared in the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, and subsequently were posted to NeoGAF.

GAME Closing Stores

GAME has announced that they will close next week, with customers being directed instead to

They have also announced that another 35 stores are to be closed, with GAME and GameStation stores being reduced to 550 outlets by Christmas.  Via MCV.

This follows the news that GAME are not stocking a number of titles, including PS Vita launch titles.

Missing Titles at GAME

High-street retailer GAME has confirmed to VG247 that they won’t be stocking Ubisoft’s PS Vita launch titles: Raymans Origins, Lumines Electronic Symphony, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Asphalt Injection and Dungeon Hunter Alliance.  No further comment has been made on behalf of GAME.

GAME have also apparently cancelled pre-orders of The Last Story Limited Edition (via VG247) and Tekken 3d Prime Edition (via Eurogamer).

This follows recent reports that GAME were struggling to raise credit insurance and acquire other stock, and were in talks to secure lending.  They are expected to make an £18 million loss this year.

Android Games – Alchemy

I recently got my first smartphone, the HTC Wildfire.. I wanted a new phone mainly for the camera and ability to record amusing videos of my friends, and this has a 5 megapixel camera with flash.  It also has the Android Market, which is full of apps and games.. 😉

This morning’s find was Alchemy.
When I saw the name, I assumed it was a clone of PopCap Games’ Alchemy and downloaded it without a second glance.. but I found it to be a rather more interesting game.

You start off with four elements, which you combine by simply dragging and dropping on top of each other.. this makes new elements, though not necessarily what you’d expect, and not necessarily what you’d call an ‘element’.  Combining water and fire produces alcohol, while water and air produces steam..

There are 370 elements to discover.. up to now I’ve found 31.  Most of the elements you produce can be used to create other elements in turn, though some, such as the “Molotov cocktail” are terminal elements, and are of no further use.

I’m not sure if this is a game that I’ll finish any time soon, as some of the elements are more likely to be discovered by randomly combining items rather than logically thinking it through.  However, it’s easy to pick up for a few minutes here and there 🙂
