EA Ends Online Pass Program

EA have announced that they are ending their controversial Online Pass program!

EASports Online Pass

In an email to GamesBeat, EA said that customer feedback had influenced the decision, saying that though it was “initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format.”

EA said that none of their future titles would require the feature.  Unfortunately, games that currently use an Online Pass (e.g. Battlefield 3 and Madden NFL) will continue to do so.

Online Passes were initially launched to ‘recoup’ costs from the sale of second-hand games.  We’ll be waiting to see whether EA include additional microtransactions or more expensive DLC in their games going forward, to reclaim the money they would have taken with an Online Pass.

We’ll also be waiting to see if other publishers, such as Activision and Ubisoft, drop the Online Pass system too.
