Back to WoW for the Iron Tide

I returned to WoW yesterday, just in time for Patch 6.0.2: The Iron Tide..

What an awesome cinematic!  I thought it set the scene for the invasion rather well.  Patch 6.0.2 adds the Iron Horde Incursion, through the Dark Portal..

Red Portal and Incursion

The Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands has turned blood red.  Hundreds of strange-looking orcs are violently pouring into Azeroth, killing everything that stands in their path.  Nethergarde and Okril’lon have already fallen, and while the Horde and the Alliance moved as quickly as they could to get reinforcements to their people, they are too late.  The Iron Horde invasion has begun!

There’s a quest chain to start the push back against the invaders, led by Thrall.. this appears in a pop-up wherever you are when you log in to a suitably-levelled character.

Along with the new story line, there’s also the usual limited time content, with a specially revamped five-player version of Upper Blackrock Spire which sets the stage for the coming counterstrike against the Iron Horde.  I hate to miss out on content, so this gave me an added spur to come back now, even if just for a short time!

There are also new character models for all the original races (Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead, Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf,and Draenei) with increased resolution and updated character animations and facial expressions.  At last! 😀

The Draenei I rolled yesterday has nicer textures especially on her hair, but looks very much the same, as the character creator was improved a while back.  I can really see a difference between the models for my Orc Warrior, Durrpy, though!  Pre-patch, with added Raptor accessories:

PrePatch Durrpy

And post-patch, looking slightly more fierce:

The new Blood Elf models have been delayed, so my Priest, Kirria, will have to wait for her make-over!

The improvements to the inventory are welcome, with the Toybox meaning various toys no longer take up valuable space in the bags.  I wish they’d categorised more items as toys, e.g., Mini Mana Bomb, The Last Relic of Argus, The Innkeeper’s Daughter, Juggling Torches and so on.. but I am glad of the change.

The Dark Portal - Now Red

I’ll be chasing all the toys down as well as the Mounts and Pets now.. that will come as no surprise to some, I’m sure 😉

The new character and class changes include a bit of squishing and pruning.  Once I get used to having a smaller health pool I doubt I’ll really be bothered as I never got into all that number juggling stuff.  I only really care that I can hold my own against similar-level creatures and in appropriately-levelled quests.  We’ll see how I fare against the Iron Tide!

There have been big changes to healing, and it looks like there’ll be more of a challenge in terms of figuring out which player to heal rather than trying to keep everyone at 100%, and making sure to use the right heal for the job.  This is the sort of gameplay I want as a healer.. hopefully I’ll get to try it out within our friends group later on!
