Albion Online – Map Creation Blog
Sandbox Interactive have produced a blog post discussing the process of map design for medieval sandbox MMO Albion Online, ahead of the start of closed beta in November.
The post goes into great detail about the process, starting with a design document, going on to a paper layout and a map template, created in Unity as this is the engine used for Albion Online. The map template gets fleshed out with more details added, from hills and lakes to NPC camps, roads and bridges, and then on to NPCs and mobs and decoration. After all this, the map is tested thoroughly.
For a small map, it takes the design team 35 hours from turning a rough paper sketch into a fully realized world in the Albion Online universe!
